She likes it garish, gaudy and glamorous. She looks fabulously expensive with that fur coat draped over her shoulders, her ears, wrists, and fingers are stacked with gold and her strut is accented with the highest stiletto possible. An aura of a panther meets a snake. She is enigmatic and hard to get yet she has the gentility and warmth only those who love and appreciate her will have access to. Who is she? She is a “mob wife.”

Today the “mob wife” aesthetic is in full force among celebrities and fashionistas. The style trend has been loading for a few years now and as of the end of 2023 coming into 2024, it has become officially a major fashion trend. Forget minimalism, demure looks and simplicity. Now is the time to be daring, unapologetically feminine but in an aggressive and wild way.

The mob wife’s look comprises of lots of fur, leather, animal print, yellow gold jewellery, heavy makeup, layered and voluminous hair and long manicured nails. She smells like musk and vanilla. Smokes only expensive cigarettes and loves martinis.

Fashion trends always have their origins and influences. Cultural, ethnic and social groups have always impacted the way style is developed over time. And mimicked and copied by fashionistas. And it feels like now more than ever, style trends change a the speed of light. The so-called “mob wife” style has its influence from film and TV characters but its origins come from the style of the women involved with the mafia. Whether its be Italian, Italian American, Hispanic, Latino, Jewish American, Irish American, English or Eastern European.

But let’s not take the meaning of a true mob wife out of context here. We can mimic and play around with aesthetics all we want but a true mob wife is a wife for a reason. She is not “old money” or a “Y2K” video vixen, nor is she the girlfriend, or the mistress. She is THE WIFE of a very influential and dangerous man. She won’t be seen in “office core,” attire but she must look the part and act the part of a boss woman. She sometimes loses her cool and patience but mostly stands strong in her power. Almost teetering on the edge of insanity. And that is what makes her a dangerous woman. She is volatile when her life and the lives of her loved ones are at risk. She has the status and tenacity to hold up in the world of crime and risk. She has her wits about her and takes control when it is most important for her. She is an unpredictable woman with a heart of gold. In a man’s world, it is a winning combination. After all, that is why her gangster hubby loves her. She is his confidante but also a prize for him to win her over. Often with luxury.

Here is a roundup of all my favourite “mob wives” and one “mob sister” in film and TV who have influenced the “mob wife” style trend immensely. TV and cinema loves to explore the world of crime and mafia, and as a result we are lucky to see such spectacular female performances and style on screen. It is more of an attitude, a mentality and a way of life. Not everyone has that “mob wife” in them, but hey, at least we can look like one and dress up fabulous.
